Welcome to my music room. It’s the place where I spend hours and days. Here, surrounded by records and lively greenery, I can truly unwind and relish in delightful music. It’s not just a room; it’s a manifestation of my love for music. This space came to life in 2022 and continues to expand with vinyl, plants, and vintage decorations.
Music Experience
In the music room, the acoustics have naturally evolved with the abundance of vinyl shelves, plants, and rugs, creating an atmosphere that’s spot-on! Nestled in my cozy vintage Eames lounge chair, I can spend hours in bliss. Positioned perfectly in front of the speakers, the chair allows me to experience the optimal sound as I sink into its embrace. The moment the needle touches the record, it sparks a magical sensation within me.
Audio setup
In 2023 I gave my setup a huge upgrade and my dream came true with the vintage TDL speakers. My entire setup consists of vintage audio, my record player is a Thorens TD160 with custom plinth and I use a Marantz 1070 as a pre-amplifier with the Luxman M150 as a power amplifier. The speakers are from TDL Studio 3. I also have an Akai reel to reel and 2 cassette decks, a Marantz 5010 and Akai CS43D. Why vintage, because I think it sounds better than new audio. This is because I only listen to vinyl and occasionally a cassette tape. So I don’t stream on my setup. The sound of vintage audio is always nice and warm and full and this also fits well with the music I listen to with it.
Vinyl Organization
I prefer to sort my vinyl collection by genre first, and then alphabetically within each genre. This method resonates with me as the most enjoyable way to organize my records. Additionally, I have a vintage record rack where I keep albums that I’ve listened to frequently. Every one to two weeks, I tidy up this rack to ensure I’m not constantly listening to the same records, thus keeping my listening experience fresh and dynamic.
In one corner of the room, I have a crate on the floor where I store all my new acquisitions that are yet to be cleaned. This system helps me stay organized and ensures that I give proper attention to each new addition before integrating it into my collection.
For storage, I rely on IKEA Kallax shelves, a popular choice among vinyl enthusiasts due to its practical design and versatility. Additionally, I make use of plastic outer sleeves for all my albums to prevent damage and minimize dust accumulation, preserving the quality of my collection over time.
When it comes to cleaning new vinyl, each record receives a thorough wash before being outfitted with a fresh inner sleeve and outer sleeve. This process not only ensures the longevity of the records but also adds to the ritualistic pleasure of caring for my collection.
Plants in the Music Room
You could say I have a passion for collecting not only vinyl but also plants. Not only do they add aesthetic appeal to the room, but they also offer numerous benefits, such as improving air quality, filtering airborne toxins, and maintaining optimal humidity levels—ideal conditions for preserving vinyl.
All of this makes for a healthier and more relaxing listening experience. I’ve got plants all around the room, ranging from Epipremnum to Dracaena, Pachira, and Strelitzia.
Decoration
My music room exudes a vintage vibe, adorned with an eclectic array of vintage decor items that I love to hunt for at thrift stores and vintage shops. I have a penchant for vintage lamps, and you’ll find several casting a soft, yellow glow throughout the room, adding the perfect finishing touch to the ambiance.
In addition to the lamps, there are various rugs adorning both the floor and the shelves, carefully chosen to enhance the aesthetic of the space. I’m particular about where and how I place each item, often stumbling upon something I find intriguing and bringing it home to see how it fits into the room. This process results in a diverse array of items scattered throughout the space, each contributing to its unique character.
Moreover, the walls are adorned with numerous posters of my favorite artists, adding a personal touch and further accentuating the room’s musical theme.
Crate Digging
In addition to enjoying vinyl listening sessions in my music room, I have a huge passion for crate digging. I love searching for records in record stores, thrift shops, and vintage stores. Twice a year, I also attend the world’s largest vinyl fair, Record Planet in Den Bosch, which is an absolute paradise for me! The most exciting part of digging is finding that record you’ve been searching for for so long. I also discover a lot of new music while searching, sometimes because the album cover catches my eye or because of the producer. One of the best finds I ever made was Leroy Hutson’s “Love Oh Love” original US pressing. I found it in a thrift store for just 7 euros, and I couldn’t believe my luck!
