Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer. He began his career with Donald Byrd and later with the Miles Davis Quintet, where he redefined the role of the jazz rhythm section. In the 1970s, he experimented with jazz fusion and electronic styles, releasing the influential album “Head Hunters”. Well-known compositions include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man”, and “Chameleon”. Hancock has won an Academy Award and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for “River: The Joni Letters” in 2007.
