One of the most commonly used methods is sorting your vinyl records by genre or artist. This makes it easy to find specific records when you’re in the mood for a particular type of music. You could, for example, have a separate section for soul, jazz, blues, etc., or keep records by the same artist together.
Alphabetical Order:
Another widely used method is organizing your vinyl collection in alphabetical order based on the artist or band name. This makes it quick and easy to find a specific record, especially if you have a large collection. Additionally, you can use the Discogs app to easily archive and track your collection, making it convenient for sorting vinyl alphabetically. You can also create different folders and sort by genre using this app.
Storage Furniture:
Invest in special storage furniture for vinyl records, such as record boxes, record racks, or modular storage solutions. These are specifically designed to keep your records safe and organized, and they also add a decorative element to your music room. One of the most well-known options is the Kallax shelves from Ikea. However, you can also build your own shelves or choose a different cabinet. Just make sure to anchor your cabinet to the wall to prevent it from collapsing due to the weight of the records. With the Kallax cabinet, this is super easy, as everything you need to secure the cabinet is included.
Vertical Storage:
Store your records vertically instead of laying them flat to prevent bending or warping. Make sure the records stand upright firmly and are not stacked too tightly to prevent damage. I prefer leaving some space between records in the shelves so I can easily browse through them. However, this is not necessary.
Protective Sleeves:
Use protective sleeves to shield your vinyl records from dust, scratches, and other damage. There are various types of sleeves available, including plastic outer sleeves and paper inner sleeves. I use plastic outer sleeves and anti-static polybags for inner sleeves. As soon as I buy an album, I wash it first and then give it a new inner and outer sleeve.
