You can pick anything from Aretha because its all classic but I choose for this record because in my opinion this is most classic one from here. With songs like Think, I Say a Little Prayer Aretha explores a wide range of emotions, from self-confidence to tenderness.

When I think of Roberta Flack, I envision a woman with a powerful voice where you can clearly hear the influence of gospel. But she is also adept at beautifully singing covers and often puts her own unique spin on them, making it not even feel like a cover. This album, for me, reflects her versatility.
Minnie Ripperton – Perfect Angel
In my list of essential soul albums, “Perfect Angel” by Minnie Riperton holds a prominent place. With her distinctive crystal-clear voice and the timeless hit “Lovin’ You,” this album exudes pure elegance and artistic finesse. Etta James – At Last
It probably can’t get more essential than this album. I am a big fan of Etta myself; her voice is full of emotion, captivating, intense, confronting, soothing, stern, loving – in short, this woman has it all. Every track on this album is worth listening to because Etta would never disappoint you.
Betty Wright – I Love You The Way You Love
I think everyone knows her biggest hit Clean Up Woman, that cut’s more than enough reason to buy the record, but the whole LP’s great and features loads of other original tracks written by Clarence Reid and Willie (Little Beaver) Hale, titles that include “I Love the Way You Love”, “I’m Gettin’ Tired Baby”, and “Pure Love” – plus a groovy cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine”.
Deniece Williams – This Is Niecy
Genius work! She cowrote them with Earth, Wind and Fire and it was suggested that she record them. She wasn’t looking to record solo but thought it would be a fun project. Deniece Williams possesses an amazing vocal range and is most comfortable at her highest falsetto. She also sings with an intense emotional range. She lives every song she sings. Marlena Shaw – The Spice Of Life
Ms. Shaw beautifully interprets the 5th Dimension’s hit, “California Soul,” originally penned by Ashford and Simpson. While her rendition may not enjoy the same widespread recognition, it stands out excellently, delivered with a more soulful approach. Personally, it’s my favorite rendition of the song. If you’re not yet acquainted with Marlena Shaw, this album serves as a wonderful introduction to discovering her artistry.
Esther Phillips – Alone Again, Naturally
Esther Phillips is a talented singer known for her powerful voice and soulful interpretations. One of my favorite songs of hers is Use Me.
With her unique style and interpretation, Esther mixes genres such as soul, jazz and blues into an immersive experience. I like her smokey vocals.
Released in 1972 by Kudu. As usual for Kudu, the players are an all-star lineup – one that includes Richard Tee on keyboards, George Benson on guitar, Maceo Parker on tenor, and Bernard Purdie and Billy Cobham on drums.
Carla Thomas – Carla
Carla Thomas, known as the queen of Memphis Soul and the daughter of Rufus Thomas, brings her musical legacy to life. As Carla herself says, “My dad probably knew I could sing before I did.” On this album, you’ll find her famous hit “B-A-B-Y,” showcasing her distinctive voice that you can recognize right away. I’m also a big fan of her collaborations with Otis Redding and their album “King & Queen.” Carla’s music is a must-have in any soul collection, highlighting her special talent and lasting impact on music’s soul.
